Walking Increases Creative Thinking

//Walking Increases Creative Thinking

Professionals WalkingHave you ever been on a walking meeting with a manager or co-worker? If not, you may want to consider taking the scenic route during your next meeting. Steve Jobs was known for his walking meetings, and Mark Zuckerberg has also been known to host meetings standing up.

An article published by the Stanford Report found that walking indoors or outdoors similarly boosted creative inspiration. You can beat the cold by taking a few laps around the office, or just down the stairs to the lobby and back. According to the article, ‘a person walking indoors on a treadmill in a room facing a blank wall or walking outdoors in the fresh air produced twice as many creative responses compared to a person sitting down’.

The study was comprised of 176 college students and adults who completed tasks used by researchers to measure creative thinking. Participants were placed in different scenarios, both in and outdoors. The studied confirmed that the creative output of the walking participants increased by an average of 60% when compared to the sitting participants.
