Protect your corporation by staying in the know! In light of recent events causing data breaches that may impact customers of Blue Cross Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network, and Premera Blue Cross, please see below for important information regarding each occurrence and the response you can expect if you or your employees were affected.
Anthem: Anthem announced it was the target of an external cyber-attack in which the attackers gained access to personal information and social security numbers. Anthem and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM)ย are separate companies, and it was Anthem’s system that was breached.
- Anthem is in the process of mailing official notices to all affected members nationally, and BCBSM is also sending a courtesy letter to each affected employeeโs household. Included in this letter is information regarding registration for free credit monitoring and identity theft repair.
- Please note that BCBSM members who live in, or have recently traveled to, one of the 14 statesย where Anthem is a Blue Cross andย Blue Shield licensee could potentially be affected by the Anthem breach.ย These states include California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan/Blue Care Network: BCBSM and federal law enforcement launched an investigation resulting in the arrest of 11 individuals in southeast Michigan for alleged identity theft. The arrested individuals possessed personal information of 5,514 Blue Care Network and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan members in printouts captured from the companiesโ information systems.
- Affected members will be contacted by letter and offered two years of free credit protection services. If a member suspects fraud, please contact the BCBSM and BCN Anti-Fraud Hotline at 800-482-3787 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Premera Blue Cross: Attackers gained access to Premeraโs IT systems and may have obtained personally identifiable information for members of Premera Blue Cross in Washington or Alaska. Blues members seeking services in these states could also be at risk. Two years of free credit monitoring and identity protection services are being offered to anyone impacted by the incident.
