Fitness App of the Week: Austin Financial Group does not endorse any of the fitness apps covered in our blog. This is for informational purposes only.

Gym-Pact

One of the most challenging aspects of sticking to a fitness routine is motivation and consistency. How often do we struggle to make it to the gym after an eight hour day at work—or for early-risers, how often do you have to drag yourself out of bed at 6 am to fit a workout it?

“The tragedy of life doesn’t lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach.” -Benjamin Mays

If you need a motivator, what better incentive than cold, hard cash? Gym-Pact is a fairly new app, available for Apple products only (for now), that incentivizes your exercise. You start with a personal commitment to make it to the gym, for example, 4 days a week. Each time you make it to the gym, you “check in” via the app and GPS tracking confirms your location and your time there at a minimum of 30 minutes. You are rewarded for meeting your weekly goal and earn cash funded by the people that didn’t work out. That being said, if you miss your goal, you pay the people that reached their own. Your personal commitment is a minimum of $5 and up to $50 a day. Since you provide Gym-Pact with credit card information, the money can be easily deducted or deposited depending on your weekly outcome.

Created by 2010 Harvard graduates, it has received some mixed reviews. It may not work for everyone–particularly if you do not belong to a standard gym recognized by the app. Account Management features are on their way so you can cancel or edit your account without sending an email via the Contact Us page, which for now is a little tedious. Like any new app, there are bound to be improvements in the future. The bottom line is, Gym-Pact provides a level of motivation and accountability that you may get by using a personal trainer or belonging to a fitness class-at probably a fraction of the cost. How could this app be incorporated into your workplace wellness program?

Gym-Pact is available as a free download on the Apple iTunes store. Visit www.gym-pact.com for more info. Try it out and tell us what you think!
